Families in motion

February 15, 2007

For immediate release

Saskatchewan in motion joins people across Saskatchewan in celebrating Family Day on Monday, February 19th. What better way to celebrate Family Day – and every day as a family – than to be active together!

Choose an activity that the entire family can participate in – walk the dog, toboggan, skate, shovel the sidewalks, play a game of shinny – whatever makes family time fun and active for you.

“Being a family in motion is important because research tells us that 46 per cent of adult residents, 73 per cent of youth aged 13-19 and 71% of children aged 5-12 are considered insufficiently active for optimal health benefits according to federal guidelines,” said Cathie Kryzanowski, Provincial Manager for Saskatchewan in motion.

There are so many benefits to being physically active.  It helps develop healthy minds and bodies, develops strong muscles and bones, helps reduce risk factors for many illnesses, and improves self-esteem and so much more.

“As a family, physical activities are a great way to have fun,” said Ingrid Currie, who along with husband Rob, and kids Carmen, Anna and Rhys are a family in motion. “Whether it’s a game of shinny on the road, a basketball game on the driveway, a run or a bike ride, having fun together as a family is the best motivation.”

Adults should be active at least 30 minutes a day, but children and youth require at least 60-90 minutes of physical activity each day. It’s time to join the physical activity movement. Get active, play and have fun. Become a family in motion.
