International Walk to School and Everywhere Else MonthFebruary 22, 2007
International Walk to School & Everywhere Else Month was an event designed to encourage schools and other organizations (i.e. workplaces) in Northern Saskatchewan to increase time spent walking during the month of October 2006. The initiative was led by the Active Communities Team (ACT) of the Northern Healthy Communities Partnership (NHCP) and part of the Northern Physical Activity Action Plan. A resource package was developed including general information on International Walk to School Month (a component of the national Active and Safe Routes to School program, supported by Go for Green), school event ideas, 20 ways to sneak in walking time, comfort and safety tips, 10 good reasons to walk to school together, a registration form and two poster templates. Schools were asked to register on line with Go for Green so that they could attain a toolkit with more resources and information for their event planning. Other organizations (i.e. workplaces) were asked to register with the Northern Sport, Culture and Recreation District. This was the first year that Northern Saskatchewan promoted this national event. The resource package was mailed to all Northern Physical Activity Week (NPAW) contacts (approximately 300 schools, communities, and organizations across the north). Participation was very positive, with 13 schools, four workplaces, and two individuals registered for International Walk to School & Everywhere Else Month in Northern Saskatchewan (note that there were 20 schools registered in the province).
